Waze, the community-driven navigation app owned by Google, is getting its first serious dose of AI. Google is weaving Gemini, its flagship AI assistant (the same technology that powers smarter search and conversational replies across Google products), into two of four new Waze features rolling out now.
The bigger of the two AI additions is Destination Search. Instead of typing a place name into the app, you can just speak naturally. Ask for "a gas station nearby with the lowest prices" or "a coffee shop that's open right now" and Waze will find options for you. It sounds small, but if you have ever fumbled with your phone at a red light, you know why hands-free search matters.
The second Gemini feature upgrades conversational reporting, a tool Waze first introduced in 2024. Before, you could tap to flag a pothole or a speed camera. Now you can describe the problem out loud in plain language, like telling Waze there is a road closure ahead or that a house number on the map is wrong. Gemini handles the conversational back-and-forth and files the report for you.
Picture this: you are stuck behind a lorry blocking a lane on your morning commute. You say "There's a road blocked near the high street", and Waze logs it without you touching the screen. That is the idea.
The two non-AI features are worth mentioning too. A new "less chatty" mode lets Waze cut down its voice prompts so the app is not constantly interrupting your podcast. And Motorcycle Mode tailors routing specifically for two-wheeled vehicles, using shortcuts a car cannot take and giving more realistic arrival times.
Waze will also start suggesting routes based on your past habits. If you always pick the motorway over backstreets, those options will appear first.
Should I update Waze or just switch to Google Maps?
You do not need to switch. Both apps are moving in similar directions, but Waze keeps its community-reporting edge, meaning real drivers flagging real problems in real time. The Verge AI first reported that Google has been more aggressive about adding AI features to Google Maps, its flagship navigation product. Waze has lagged behind until now. These four updates narrow that gap without removing what makes Waze useful.
